Horrors that belong in a George Orwell novel are happening in Dilley, Texas as you read this.
Currently, hundreds of detainees, including women, children, and 15 infants are kept in dog cages and a refrigerated building designed to keep them from sleeping. Two baloney sandwiches is a standard four-day food supply for families and visitors are not allowed to give food to the starving detainees, nor are they allowed to hug or comfort crying children. All of this happening in the name of racism and profit.
Tessa Dare decided to help fight to get refugees out of this hellhole. She called on the Romance community to help her out.
She pledged to match donations to Clinic Legal until July 4, up to $3,000. She chose CLINIC because it provides on-site legal advocacy to women and children seeking asylum while also having an exceptional score of 97% on Charity Navigator.
Dare provided links to the Dilley Pro Bono project’s donation page, as well as a video testimonial from one of CLINIC’s volunteers.
So far, she’s raised $1,500 for legal aid for asylum seekers. And, wanting to get the money to CLINIC as fast as possible, she’s already donated $3,000 herself, instead of waiting for July 4th, like she had originally planned.
It’s not too late to donate to they Dilley Pro Bono project, though. With hundreds of asylum seekers still being detained in tortuous conditions, they need all the help they can get. Join the rest of the romance community fighting this injustice by either donating or volunteering.
