There has been much excitement since Netflix announced a Shondaland series based off Julia Quinn’s Bridgerton series.
Shooting is scheduled to wrap up in early 2020, so the show will most likely air in the fall of 2020.
We’ve learned a lot since the announcement of Bridgerton, including Julie Andrews being cast as Lady Whistledown and the show using racially blind casting. Now the entire cast has been announced and it includes rising actors like Younger’s Phoebe Dynevor and For the People’s Regé-Jean Page.
But despite the elation and buzz of the famous romance novel series coming to Netflix, there are some doubts about how closely the show will follow the series.
Shondaland describes the show as a high society drama full of intrigue and power.
The “Bridgerton” series is a fascinating, fictionalized look at London high society, a world filled with power, sex, romance, and betrayal. All of this, of course, is grounded in a 21st century gender equality mindset, because, as Quinn says, “portraying a healthy relationship in literature is the most revolutionary thing you can do.”

But while the books are set in London high society and while Julia Quinn makes a point of having healthy relationships in her books with an emphasis on equality, the books are less intrigue and more heartwarming romance.
This acclaimed and heartwarming set of love stories is not Grey’s Anatomy. Nor is it Scandal, How to Get Away With Murder, or even The Catch. The number of alliances, betrayals, and badass moments in the Bridgertonscomes out to zero. To say that the upcoming show and Shondaland’s other productions have nothing in common is an understatement. Will these people know what to do with our family of eight?

We won’t find out exactly how true the show is to the books until after it airs in 2020. Until then, we can only hope the Netflix show is as good as Julia Quinn’s The Bridgerton Family series.
