Maggie Blackbird is an Ojibway author who writes romance novels about Canada’s indigenous people.
LQ: What does your writing process look like?
MB: I always start with a tagline and a blurb. This helps me find the GMC for the novel. Once I have that done, I begin drafting. I don’t stop until the draft is complete. Then comes the editing process…
LQ: What was your favorite book to write so far?
MB: Now this is a really tough question. Looking back on all the books I’ve written, I must say my latest release, Two Princes, was something I really enjoyed writing. I love the characters of Billy and René. They have so many problems to face, so many important decisions to make, and so many changes in store for them—all so they can have a happily ever after.
LQ: Who is your favorite character to write about?
MB: Billy Redsky from my latest novel, Two Princes, a young adult, contemporary, m/m romance. I love his attitude. His voice. His outlook on life. He’s spunky and a fighter.
LQ: Who are your favorite authors? Have any of them influenced your work?
MB: For romance, Johanna Lindsey and Rosanne Bittner. For literary, Richard Wagamese. I can’t say they’ve influenced what I’ve written since they write in historical, while I’m mainly contemporary, but their “voices” had a big impact on me. Both are very different with how they approach novels, and they have memorable characters that stay with me for a long time.
As for Richard, I can only dream about writing like him LOL. He’s awesome.
LQ: What are you currently working on?
MB: I’m finishing the final self-edit on Toy Soldiers, book two in the When We Were Young series. I’m hoping to have this MS subbed to my publisher by late Sunday night.
LQ: Anything else you would like to share?
MB: I hope readers enjoy my books as much as I loved writing them. Thank you for having me at your blog. I really appreciate it.
